About Pilates & Getting Started

7 questions

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact, full-body movement method developed by Joseph Pilates that focuses on core strength, posture, flexibility, balance, breath, and controlled movement. At Elin Pilates, we emphasize precise alignment, deep core stability, and mindful movement to help you move and feel better in everyday life.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Regular Pilates practice can help improve:

  • Core strength and posture
  • Flexibility and mobility
  • Balance and coordination
  • Muscle tone and body awareness
  • Back, neck, and joint discomfort
  • Energy levels and stress management

Many clients notice improved posture, strength, and easier daily movement within several consistent sessions.

What's the difference between Pilates and yoga?

Both Pilates and yoga focus on breath and mind-body connection, but Pilates is generally more movement-based and strength-focused. Pilates also uses specialized equipment like reformers with spring resistance to improve alignment, stability, and controlled strength.

What's the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?

Both Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates are excellent and effective forms of Pilates. Here's a clear breakdown:

Mat Pilates primarily uses your own body weight and small props (such as balls, rings, or bands). It is excellent for building core strength, improving balance, coordination, and body awareness. Mat work is highly portable, can be done anywhere, and is a fantastic way to develop control and endurance using your own body as resistance.

Reformer Pilates uses a specialized piece of equipment with a sliding carriage, springs, and straps. The springs provide adjustable resistance and assistance, which allows for greater support, more variety of exercises, precise alignment work, and targeted muscle strengthening or lengthening. It is especially helpful for building strength safely, accommodating different body types, and progressing movements with support.

At Elin Pilates, we offer both styles through our different class formats:

Our Reformer & Chair classes focus on the reformer and stability chair.

Our Spring Wall & Mat classes combine mat work with spring wall resistance.

Many clients enjoy mixing both formats because they complement each other beautifully — mat work builds foundational control and endurance, while reformer-based work adds resistance, support, and variety for deeper strength and precision.

We're happy to help you choose the style that best suits your goals, current fitness level, or preferences.

Is Pilates good for beginners?

Absolutely. You do not need prior experience, flexibility, or fitness knowledge to begin Pilates. Our instructors provide modifications and clear guidance so clients of all levels feel comfortable and supported.

How often should I do Pilates?

For best results, we recommend practicing Pilates 2–4 times per week consistently. Many clients begin noticing changes in posture, strength, mobility, and body awareness after 8–12 sessions.

Will Pilates help me lose weight or tone my body?

Pilates helps build lean muscle, improve posture, strengthen the core, and support overall body composition. Combined with healthy lifestyle habits, it can support weight management and create a longer, more sculpted appearance.

Your First Visit

5 questions

I'm new — what should I expect during my first session?

Welcome to Elin Pilates! Please arrive 5–10 minutes early. This gives us time for a quick studio tour, equipment introduction, and to complete any remaining paperwork (such as your New Client Intake Form or waiver) if it wasn't finished online.

We'll also happily answer any questions you may have at this time.

Your instructor will then guide you through the entire session with clear, personalized cueing and support. Our studio environment is calm, welcoming, and beginner-friendly, with a strong focus on alignment and proper form from the very first movement.

Do I need an intro session before joining classes?

We strongly recommend starting with one of our Intro Packages (Solo, Solo+Group, Duo, or Duo+Group) if you are new to Pilates or reformer equipment.

These introductory sessions are specifically designed to prepare you for group classes by teaching proper form, equipment safety, breathing techniques, and — most importantly — the precise alignment principles needed to safely and effectively align your body during every movement.

This foundation helps you get the most out of your future mini-group classes while reducing the risk of injury and building confidence from day one.

What should I wear to class?

Please wear comfortable, form-fitting activewear that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are required for safety and hygiene. We also sell high-quality grip socks in-studio if needed.

What should I bring?

Please bring:

  • Grip socks
  • A water bottle
  • Comfortable workout clothing

All Pilates equipment and props are provided.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! Friends and family are welcome to join you by booking their own session or class, subject to availability. Guests must also be booked into the same class or session in advance to attend. They can purchase a single group class and join you together, or you can book a Duo Session for a more personalized shared experience.

To maintain a calm and comfortable studio environment for all clients, we kindly ask that non-participating guests do not remain in the studio during classes or sessions.

Classes & Equipment

6 questions

What types of sessions do you offer?

We offer:

  • Solo Sessions (Private 1-on-1)
  • Duo Sessions (Semi-private 2-on-1)
  • Reformer & Chair Mini-Group Classes (up to 5 participants)
  • Spring Wall & Mat Mini-Group Classes (up to 5 participants)

Our small class sizes allow for personalized attention, hands-on cueing, and thoughtful progressions.

What's the difference between your group classes?

We currently offer two small-group Pilates class formats at Elin Pilates:

Reformer & Chair Group

This class uses the Pilates reformer and stability chair to build full-body strength, core control, posture, balance, and coordination through spring-based resistance training. Expect a dynamic, low-impact workout that challenges both strength and stability while remaining accessible for different fitness levels.

Spring Wall & Mat Group

This class combines traditional Pilates matwork with spring wall equipment, which uses adjustable spring resistance attached to the wall for both support and challenge. Spring wall training helps improve posture, alignment, mobility, core strength, and body awareness in a controlled and approachable way.

This format is excellent for beginners and experienced clients alike, offering a more grounded and functional movement experience while still delivering an effective full-body workout.

Both class formats are instructor-guided, low-impact, and intentionally kept small to ensure personalized attention, proper form, and a supportive studio environment.

What equipment do you use?

We use premium Merrithew Pilates equipment, including reformers, stability chairs, spring walls, and a variety of small props such as rings, balls, and resistance accessories to support a well rounded and effective workout experience.

How long are sessions?

All sessions and classes are approximately 50 minutes long.

Are your group classes beginner-friendly?

Yes. Our small-group classes are designed to accommodate different experience levels through instructor guidance, exercise modifications, and personalized progressions.

Because our class sizes are intentionally kept small, instructors are able to provide individualized cueing and adjustments throughout class. This allows each client to work at an intensity and level that is appropriate for their body, experience, and goals — even within a group setting of mixed levels and abilities.

Booking & Policies

5 questions

How do I book a session or group class?

You can book sessions and group classes directly through our website at elinpilates.ca or through the Elin Pilates app. We recommend booking in advance since class sizes are intentionally small and spots can fill quickly.

If you need any assistance with booking, choosing the right session, or finding a suitable class level, please feel free to contact us at hello@elinpilates.ca or 403-808-8926.

Do you offer intro packages?

Yes. We offer Intro Packages for new clients to help you begin Pilates safely, confidently, and with a stronger understanding of your body and movement patterns.

Our intro sessions are designed to help you become familiar with the equipment, learn proper alignment and technique, and build a solid foundation before progressing into regular group classes or ongoing training. They also give our instructors an opportunity to better understand your goals, movement habits, and any limitations so we can guide you more effectively.

Whether you are completely new to Pilates or returning after a break, Intro Packages are the best way to ease into your practice comfortably and efficiently.

You can view all pricing and package options on our Pricing page.

What is your cancellation policy?

We kindly ask clients to cancel group classes at least 12 hours in advance and Solo or Duo Sessions at least 24 hours in advance to avoid losing a session credit or incurring a late cancellation fee.

Because our classes and sessions are intentionally kept small, late cancellations and no shows can impact other clients who may be waiting for an available spot. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a smooth experience for everyone.

How does the waitlist work?

If a class is full, you can join the waitlist through the booking system. If a spot becomes available, you will automatically receive a notification.

What happens if I arrive late?

For safety and class flow, late arrivals may not be admitted once class has started. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early whenever possible.

Health, Safety & Special Considerations

5 questions

Can I do Pilates while pregnant?

Yes, many clients safely practice Pilates during pregnancy with appropriate modifications. We recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before beginning and suggest starting Pilates after the first trimester to help ensure a safer and more comfortable experience.

At Elin Pilates, we currently offer Prenatal Solo Sessions tailored to your stage of pregnancy, comfort level, and movement needs. We can also accommodate private prenatal group classes for groups of 3 or more pregnant clients booking together. For the best and safest experience, we recommend private prenatal groups be in similar trimesters whenever possible. Pricing may vary depending on group size for groups of 3 or 4 clients, while private groups of 5 clients follow our standard posted group class pricing.

Please contact us in advance before booking so we can recommend the most suitable option and ensure exercises are appropriately modified for you.

Do you work with postpartum clients?

Absolutely. Pilates can be incredibly supportive during postpartum recovery by helping rebuild core strength, improve posture, restore pelvic stability, and reconnect overall body awareness after pregnancy and delivery.

Many postpartum clients experience common discomforts such as wrist pain, lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension from feeding or carrying baby, hip tightness, pelvic instability, weakened core muscles, and general fatigue. Pilates can help address these concerns through controlled, low impact movement and gradual strength rebuilding.

At Elin Pilates, we strongly recommend beginning with private Solo Sessions, particularly on the reformer rather than mat based classes. The reformer provides additional support, resistance, and stability, allowing movements to be more safely adjusted to your recovery stage while reducing unnecessary strain on areas like the wrists, neck, lower back, and pelvic floor.

Because every postpartum recovery is different, private sessions allow us to tailor programming specifically to your body, comfort level, delivery history, and goals before transitioning into group classes when appropriate. We also recommend receiving clearance from your healthcare provider before beginning postpartum exercise.

What if I have injuries or back/joint pain?

Pilates is highly adaptable and is commonly used to support injury prevention, rehabilitation, mobility, posture, and long term joint health. Many clients come to us experiencing concerns such as lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, wrist discomfort, hip tightness, knee pain, pelvic instability, stiffness from desk work, or general movement limitations.

Before your first visit, you will complete a client intake form that helps us better understand any injuries, pain, medical history, surgeries, or movement concerns you may have. Your first session also gives the instructor an opportunity to dive deeper into your movement patterns, limitations, lifestyle habits, and goals so we can provide the safest and most effective recommendations for you.

For clients requiring additional support or more individualized attention, we strongly recommend beginning with private Solo Sessions, particularly on the reformer rather than traditional mat classes. Reformer based Pilates provides more support, stability, controlled resistance, and exercise customization, which can help reduce unnecessary strain on sensitive joints while allowing movement patterns to be corrected more safely and effectively.

Private sessions allow us to tailor programming specifically to your needs and recovery level before transitioning into group classes if appropriate. While Pilates can be highly beneficial for many conditions, we also recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or rehabilitation professional when needed before beginning exercise.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

Our classes are generally suitable for clients ages 12 and older with parental consent for minors. However, for equipment based Pilates classes, height, body awareness, and the ability to safely follow instruction are often more important factors than age alone.

For safety and proper equipment use, we generally recommend clients be at least approximately 150 cm (4'11") tall to comfortably and safely use the reformers and other studio equipment. Final recommendations may vary depending on the individual student's proportions, coordination, and experience level.

Pilates can be especially beneficial for growing adolescents and teens by helping improve posture, flexibility, core strength, balance, coordination, body awareness, and healthy movement habits during important growth stages. It may also help support better alignment and posture, particularly for students involved in sports, dance, or long hours of studying and desk work.

For younger clients or teens new to Pilates, we may recommend beginning with private sessions first so instruction and equipment settings can be more appropriately tailored to their needs and development stage. Please contact us before booking for clients under 18 so we can help determine the most suitable option.

Do you accommodate seniors or mobility concerns?

Yes. Pilates can be highly beneficial for older adults and seniors by helping improve mobility, balance, posture, flexibility, coordination, core strength, and overall confidence in movement. Its low impact and controlled approach makes it suitable for many different fitness and mobility levels.

Many senior clients use Pilates to help reduce stiffness, improve stability and joint health, support better posture, relieve common aches such as lower back pain, and maintain strength for everyday activities and long term independence. Pilates may also help improve balance and body awareness, which can contribute to safer movement and fall prevention.

At Elin Pilates, exercises can always be modified based on your comfort level, mobility, and physical needs. For clients with injuries, mobility concerns, or those new to exercise, we may recommend beginning with private Solo Sessions for more personalized support and guidance.

Other Questions

3 questions

Should I choose private sessions or group classes?

Both options can be excellent depending on your experience level, goals, comfort level, and any physical considerations you may have. At Elin Pilates, our small class sizes allow for a more personalized experience across all session types.

Private Sessions (1:1)

Private sessions are ideal for beginners, clients recovering from injuries, prenatal or postpartum clients, or anyone wanting highly individualized instruction. These sessions allow the instructor to focus entirely on your body, alignment, movement patterns, goals, and any limitations or concerns you may have. Private sessions are also the best way to build a strong foundation and confidence before transitioning into group classes.

Duo Sessions (1:2)

Duo sessions are a great option for partners, friends, or family members who would like a more personalized experience together while still benefiting from individualized coaching and exercise modifications.

Mini Group Classes (1:5)

Our mini group classes offer a supportive and motivating environment while still allowing for individualized attention due to our intentionally small class sizes. Group classes are best suited for clients who are comfortable following Pilates instruction in a shared setting and want to continue building strength, mobility, and consistency in their practice.

If you are unsure where to start, we generally recommend beginning with an Intro Package or private session so we can better understand your body, movement habits, and goals before recommending the most suitable class option for you.

Why choose a boutique Pilates studio instead of a gym?

Boutique Pilates studios offer a more personal and intentional experience compared to larger fitness environments. With smaller class sizes, instructors are able to provide more individualized coaching, closer attention to form and alignment, and more meaningful guidance throughout each session.

At Elin Pilates, no client gets lost in the crowd. Every session is taught with care, precision, and attention to your individual movement patterns, posture, mobility, and goals. Our instructors are able to provide real time corrections, modifications, and encouragement to help you move more safely and effectively.

A smaller studio environment also creates a calmer and more welcoming atmosphere where clients can feel comfortable asking questions, progressing at their own pace, and building confidence in their movement practice. We believe Pilates is most effective when clients feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for throughout their journey.
