About Pilates & Getting Started
7 questions
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact, full-body movement method developed by Joseph Pilates that focuses on core strength, posture, flexibility, balance, breath, and controlled movement. At Elin Pilates, we emphasize precise alignment, deep core stability, and mindful movement to help you move and feel better in everyday life.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Regular Pilates practice can help improve:
- Core strength and posture
- Flexibility and mobility
- Balance and coordination
- Muscle tone and body awareness
- Back, neck, and joint discomfort
- Energy levels and stress management
Many clients notice improved posture, strength, and easier daily movement within several consistent sessions.
What's the difference between Pilates and yoga?
Both Pilates and yoga focus on breath and mind-body connection, but Pilates is generally more movement-based and strength-focused. Pilates also uses specialized equipment like reformers with spring resistance to improve alignment, stability, and controlled strength.
What's the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Both Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates are excellent and effective forms of Pilates. Here's a clear breakdown:
Mat Pilates primarily uses your own body weight and small props (such as balls, rings, or bands). It is excellent for building core strength, improving balance, coordination, and body awareness. Mat work is highly portable, can be done anywhere, and is a fantastic way to develop control and endurance using your own body as resistance.
Reformer Pilates uses a specialized piece of equipment with a sliding carriage, springs, and straps. The springs provide adjustable resistance and assistance, which allows for greater support, more variety of exercises, precise alignment work, and targeted muscle strengthening or lengthening. It is especially helpful for building strength safely, accommodating different body types, and progressing movements with support.
At Elin Pilates, we offer both styles through our different class formats:
Our Reformer & Chair classes focus on the reformer and stability chair.
Our Spring Wall & Mat classes combine mat work with spring wall resistance.
Many clients enjoy mixing both formats because they complement each other beautifully — mat work builds foundational control and endurance, while reformer-based work adds resistance, support, and variety for deeper strength and precision.
We're happy to help you choose the style that best suits your goals, current fitness level, or preferences.
Is Pilates good for beginners?
Absolutely. You do not need prior experience, flexibility, or fitness knowledge to begin Pilates. Our instructors provide modifications and clear guidance so clients of all levels feel comfortable and supported.
How often should I do Pilates?
For best results, we recommend practicing Pilates 2–4 times per week consistently. Many clients begin noticing changes in posture, strength, mobility, and body awareness after 8–12 sessions.
Will Pilates help me lose weight or tone my body?
Pilates helps build lean muscle, improve posture, strengthen the core, and support overall body composition. Combined with healthy lifestyle habits, it can support weight management and create a longer, more sculpted appearance.
